OSCARC Newsletter for August 2011
The regular monthly meeting was held Aug/02/2011 at the Leaside Retirement Residence and called to order @ 1936 EDT by Chairman, John VA3JE.
Present: John VA3JE (Chairman), Bill VE3RYE, David VE3SB, Dave VE3ETE, Alex VE3XLO, Ori VA3XW, Bill VE3WTT (Treasurer), Ward VE3WGK, Fai VE3FAI Regrets: Peter VE3EYI, Jean VE3WAD, Jay VE3EMP, Bill VE3PPC, Ray VE3UKO, Paul VE3PAW, Cristo Risteski, Peter Dederer VE3JR (retired from the club due to other commitments), Neil VE3NGS (who has returned to New Zealand as ZL1NZ), Jeff VE3PRX (Secretary) Guest: Harold Murray VE3VJJ
The Chairman JE had a round table introduction to our guest Harold Murray VE3VJJ who may become a resident at LRR.
The Chairman read the minutes from July 5 meeting. There were no errors or omissions so a Motion to adopt as presented was made by Ward WGK, seconded by Bill WTT. Motion carried.
Business arising from minutes:
-Six members have volunteered to teach the13 week basic course starting mid-September. Ori XW pointed out that we should set dates for the course and printed material ASAP
-Tim IXN from the floor presented a TCA article which mentions VE3OSC station and a visit from VE2CW in touring OSC for project OJIBWA creating a Submarine Museum radio room. Copies of the article were distributed to members present. Tim also provided copies of a Shell Oil Report which warned of fueling vehicles while using a cell phone. Best practice is to turn off cell phone while fueling as even receiving a call could cause ignition at the pumps.
By-Election for interim President.
-Due to Neil VE3NGS having to return to New Zealand a by-election was required to fill the post of President for the balance of his term.
-The Chairman indicated that there were no other nominations during the month of July since the last meeting when nominations were put forward for Peter VE3EYI) and Ward VE3WGK.
Election was by secret ballot adjudicated by Tim IXN. From 9 members present + 3 proxy votes the results were Peter EYI 10 Ward WGK 2.
-Peter Dale VE3EYI was declared President elect to Sept 2012.
General Business:
-The Chairman presented a retrospective of the past season with highlights forom past meetings, Presentations and outings. He then challenged members present to come up with ideas and presentations they would like to see in the new season and bring a list to our September 6 meeting.
Members on the air:
-The Chairman reported that Jay EMP had a contact with ISS and the astronauts during a near perfect pass over Toronto using a handheld and a small Arrow antenna!!! This is a rare accomplishment as the Astronauts normally don’t make direct contact but usually just report stations heard.
-Fai (FAI) and Ori (XW) told of a chance meeting with VE3GPB over the air.
-Ori (XW) mentioned some rare DX stations available in the next few weeks. Including LA2011KM from Bulgaria, DL0YLWM special event for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, VC9M Moncton area 75th Anniversary Station, 4T1000MP special event 100th anniversary of the discovery of Machu Picchu in Peru.
-In the milestone department the Chairman mentioned that our newly elected President Peter EYI celebrates 50 years as an amateur…first licensed August 8 1961 (as a small child /p).
Break for refreshments was called from 20:53 to 21:09.
Presentation: Ward WGK presented CanWarn Storm Spotter videos from the new CanWarn training program. He will give a more complete presentation at a future meeting.
After the Presenter was thanked the Meeting was adjourned at 22:01 EDT.
Our New Season Begins at the next meeting September 6 2011.
